Today was the first official meeting of the Arts and Sciences Colleges Student Council (ASC SC). I got free pizza....and I gave my little speech on what I do as an officer.
The spiel:

Last year I was a wide-eyed prospective member on the other side of the table. This year I am the treasurer…an officer, I have power. Mwuahahahahaha!
Actually, that may not be entirely correct since everyone in our club has power and a voice. I just keep the checkbooks, track the funds, organize fundraising and submit audits. What I do is actually quite important since I am handling a larger amount of money at times...or none at all (not to mention looks good on a résumé).
So what does the ASC SC do?
“[We] foster better relationships between the Arts students the faculty of this college. It aids worthwhile student projects and endeavors to develop greater loyalty in the student body.”
Throughout the year we participate in:
• Academic, social, and service events

That's me and fellow club members running a booth at a carnival on the oval!
• Volunteer in the community
• Quarterly Meet the Professor nights and an annual Meet the Deans event.

Students listening to the deans at an event we put on.
• Outstanding Teaching Award
• Meet Gee event for Arts & Sciences students

Me and President Gee...and others
• And have say in curriculum changes

It took me a few tries to find a club that suited me. It was nice to be able to become an officer my senior year.
Why join?
I originally joined this club to meet more people since I was a transfer student. It is a good idea for any new student to join a club or student organization. This is great for my major within the College of Arts and Sciences and helped to make this large university smaller and navigate it easier.
We get to know professors and deans on a more personal level. We also meet with President Gee once a year in a relaxed environment. Last year it was at Donato’s.
It is a group of students who can be professional but are comfortable in a more relaxed environment.
If you are in the College of Arts and Sciences, think about joining this club! ( Did I mention it looks good on a résumé or application for professional schools?)
Great! When is the next meeting?
Our meetings are bi-weekly in room 204 in the Thompson Library. The next meeting is Tuesday, October 13. That’s where all of the meetings will be for the year.
Don’t worry about not being accepted into this club because you missed the first meeting. We have a couple of new people who have not yet attended our meeting.
This club sucks. What else can I join?
If you are interested in this club or any other organization ( if you are not in the College of Arts and Sciences), there are many opportunities out there. Visit the Ohio Student Union website to find more.
