I wrote my professor to tell him I would be missing class. He said it was fine...but he got my name wrong--in an email!

First off I'd like to apologize that it has taken me forever to update my blog but I have been going through a rough patch. My grandfather passed away and I had to miss some classes to go out of town. Below is the email that my professor sent me as a response to an email I sent him:

Armando,

Please receive my condolences and do not worry for today's attendance. You'll do another introduction, so please review our program and let me know as soon as you can which other reading you'd like to introduce.

Best,

IC

I'd like to point out the fact that he got my name wrong...ARMANDO? Really?! There isn't even an Armando in my class.

Last week I skipped two classes and it was acceptable. I won't lie; in previous years of school I have skipped class for various reasons:

1.) I need sleep
2.) I’m lazy
3.) Too cold outside
4.) Too rainy outside
5.) Too sick
6.) Don’t have clean socks
7.) Hungry
8.) Just took the midterm last class
9.) I don’t feel like going
10.) No good reason

However, I grew out of all of that and became more serious with school as I realized that my future depends on it. No matter how easy I think a class is I go anyway…at least because I’m paying for it. I go to bed earlier or pump myself up with caffeine. Sometimes I need a bit of motivation on cold days when I am dreading my 25 minute walk to class, yet I go.

This year I was doing great. I had not missed a class until last week and that was due to my grandfather’s funeral. The nice thing is that professors tend to understand these things. The bad part is all of the make-up work and important information missed in class— not to mention the intense feelings of guilt.

I see it all the time. Students go to class if they are sick or completely out of it. They go to class no matter how tired they are and sleep through class. No doubt they are not taking anything out of being there and would probably be better off at home recuperating.

My professor reminded us that we should stay home if we have H1N1. Are students seriously going to class with swine flu! It’s sad that they actually need to remind us that! We get so stressed out about missing class.

So all in all what I am really trying to get at is that in the whole scheme of things, missing a few classes is ok. Just as long as it is not a habit. There are some things that are more important, like your health or family for instance.

Stay home if you are sick. And don't feel guilty if you miss class for personal reasons!!

Well that made me feel better.  I promise a less depressing blog will come soon!
