The OSU Involvement Fair...home of free food, laundry bags, lanyards, Tobacco International planners (no joke)...and a whole lot of rejection.
Today I worked my first Involvement Fair; I attended last year, but this year I actually handed out InterVarsity Christian Fellowship fliers both to freshmen coming out of the Shoe (aka the Ohio Stadium) from convocation (the gigantic welcome event all freshmen attended today) and at the actual fair itself. Wow, I'm not sure if I've ever been rejected so many times in one day. The standard routine would go something like "Hi, are you interested in Christian community?" or "Hi, do you like Four Square and free food?" followed by a "no thanks," a "no" accompanied by a scornful chortle, or at times being completely ignored, which probably hurt the most of all.
I understand. Of course I do. We've all walked busily past the cellular phone plan providers in shopping malls, but of course it's different when you're on the receiving end.
And yet, amidst the parched throat brought on by so much querying and the dearth of affirmation, the few "Sure"s and "I guess"es and even "Maybe--I'll take a flier"s were incredibly welcome and encouraging. And a little intimidating, given that I'm supposed to buy food for all of our guests tomorrow, and figure out how to set up enough four square courts to satisfy those eager to show off their cherry-bombing abilities?
Not to mention...somehow one feels more affirmed in one's faith after taking a hit for it. Which may sound paradoxical. But honestly, someday I will stand toe-to-toe with those boiled alive, sawed in half, devoured by lions, and beheaded for their faith...and what will I have to say to them? What did I suffer? Is it really anything to have your ego bruised when others are having their bodies bruised?
Anyway, I'm also moved into my dorm! Once my roomie and I finish decorating I'll try to put up some pictures. :]
