Welcome Week at OSU offers a huge variety of activities and events for new and returning students. Some of them are great, some quite quaint, all present the opportunity to develop relationships and get (back) into the swing of things.

The Ohio Union fronts most of the activities that happen during Welcome Week. However, a collaboration of representative from campus departments and student populations alike make it all happen. The events are designed to provide the information necessary to really involve yourself in the university.

To ensure that all that actually happens, one of the first scheduled activities is the Involvement Fair. This is one of the larger events; it covers the entire Oval. More than 500 student organizations and clubs attend and there are tons of giveaways (free food.) This is one of my favorites, and I try to attend every year. This time around I kept buddies company as they worked the tables.

Another one of my favorite activities is Community Commitment. This event features campus-wide community service. A lot of it is picking up trash, which on a rainy day isn’t the best, but if you get lucky (like I did,) you could end up in the library. The focus of this year’s Community Commitment was on issues of child access to education.

But back to the free food that everyone loves. In order to truly welcome (back) students, a picnic is in order. The dance department held theirs last night, and of course there was pizza. It was Adriadico’s/ good pizza, oh yeah, and we had salad too. I guess some prefer to eat healthily.

The dance picnic welcomes family, which I enjoy because I feel like I get to know everyone a little better. And the invented games are much more fun to watch when children are involved. I wish you could have seen everyone running around clucking, cooing and mooing. It’s too much too describe, so I’ll leave your imagination to it. Just think grad students, barking…

Welcome Week is coming to a close, and real life with soon settle in, hopefully with everyone a little more comfortable with campus and reacquainted with friends.
