Watch out for these tell tale signs on the first day of class…

You’ve got your books, your paper, your mechanical pencils (as previously mentioned, I have a slight obsession with school supplies,) and you’re in your seat, ready for class. Everyone is unusually alert. It’s the first day, after all. The anticipation is almost too much to handle. Then, the instructor walks in the room, and he appears to be quite disgruntled. Uh oh.

A few things that make you wary on the first day of class:

1. Droves of people exiting the room half way through the syllabus.

This is no good, and rude to boot. Every class will not be a bird course, but when the syllabus looks so bad that half the class leaves before we even get to the course outline, be afraid. Be very afraid.

2. “My exams generally follow a bell curve.”

I know this is probably standard, but it makes me nervous. I want an “A” in the class, but this makes it seem like it’s going to be a little more difficult than I presumed.

3. “My class follows a strict attendance policy.”

Again, they probably all say this, but this class actually has a strict attendance policy. After one day, you’re basically done. I’m not one to miss class (perfect attendance grade 1-12—yes, I am a nerd,) but I like to have the option.

4. “This class starts at 7:30 a.m.”

Ok, so I knew this one going in, but you’re still welcome to cry me a river. These classes are not for the faint of heart. You’ve got to be out of the door no later than 7:20 (Remember the strict attendance policy? Tardiness applies.)

5. Tests everyday!

This may be why all those guys left half way through the syllabus. Hey, it keeps you on your toes.

The best thing about a bad first day is a better second day. It only looks up from here...and if not, it's only 10 weeks!
