Today, as I stuffed my face with an entire pack of a favorite pastime (those tasty, tangy, taffies,) I considered some personal goals.

About four times a quarter in the dance department we have what are called Advising Colloquia. We basically discuss future plans and how to best attain them, as well as how to optimally maneuver our way through the program—ensure the maximum benefit. It can be quite helpful. I have one this Friday and to it, I am to bring a paper stating my personal and professional goals in life. It’s such a loaded question, and I’ve been having some trouble with it. Frankly, I just don’t know.

My contract rationale (that’s what they call them) only has to be about a page long, but there are so many options and what to include evades me. Each student chooses a set of classes that best fits their needs/desires. We can choose to focus in choreography, notation, technology, production, and performance or, like me, a broad set of classes, otherwise known as a lack of focus. The idea is that whatever I choose to do now should influence what I do later—a direct correspondence. It makes sense, of course. That’s how it should be. However, I’m still not prepared to make that decision now.

So, what I’m going to do is fabricate a few things and hope it all works out, which it usually does. I’ll make it work. Speaking of work, I better get to that paper now, rather than later…
