This month I’m giving my advice to the newest members of the Buckeye family

 I’m in the mood
To help you dude,
You ain’t never had a friend like me!

-“Friend Like Me” from Disney’s Aladdin

About a year ago, I had a million questions about OSU.  Through the magic of facebook I was able to find answers for the important questions.  But there were still little things here and there that I was curious about.  Well, if you’re about to start your four(ish)-year odyssey at Ohio State, this month’s blogs are for you!

I may be only a second-year student, but I like to think I’ve learned a great deal about OSU.  Additionally, as an Honors Ambassador and an Engineering Ambassador (two separate roles, each dedicated to helping potential students learn more about OSU) AND a Buckeyes Blogger, I feel it’s my duty to help get information out there whenever I can.  Also- and this is something you'll understand very soon - as a member of the Buckeye family, I think it's important to make the newest members feel welcome.  To be a Buckeye is to be part of one of the biggest, most dynamic, and exciting communities in the world!

Here are some of the topics I’ll try to cover this month:

  • Waiting for September 20 – How to deal with waiting for a Quarter school to start
  • Food! – Where do you want to eat?  Where should you avoid?
  • Student Involvement – 904 student organizations…  How do I find the one(s) for me?!
  • Packing List – Beyond that silly list provided at housing.osu.edu
  • Welcome Week – How to get the most fun out of this legendary week of awesome
  • College Classes – Profs?  Instructors?  TAs?  Textbooks?  AHHHHHHHHhhh!
  • Study Breaks – Where/how/why do I study on campus?

I’ll include an anecdote or two for each along with the helpful advice.  They should be relatively fun to read.  And hey, you might just learn a thing or two about what to expect from THE Ohio State University!

As always, if you have any questions about anything OSU, definitely leave me a comment and I’ll reply ASAP (also in the comments)!

Take care (and get excited for Fall 2009),
Rob

Re: September and Freshmen Essentials

Dear Robert,

I like the idea of you dedicating this month's blogs to new incoming freshmen like myself. I really look forward to the rest, and I hope they all come before I move in (Septehmber 17th: I'm an OWL, thank goodness because I don't think I can take the wait much longer).

Re: September and Freshmen Essentials

No worries about spelling; I'm pretty sure I've messed a few up here and there too. =)

While I've (sort of, ish) outlined what I plan to cover, is there any particular topic you think incoming freshmen are absolutely DYING to hear about? I'd love to hear right from the source about what's worth blogging about and what's not.

Take care,
Rob

PS- I've heard lots of great things about OWL-ing. I've got many friends doing it again for a second year, especially in Lincoln.

Re: September and Freshmen Essentials

Well, according to the Ohio State University Class of 2013 Facebook group discussion tables, many of us are wondering about things like how to get our books and not be ripped off, the things that maybe you forgot to pack your first year, getting a job on campus (particularly the front desk jobs), whether to get a mac vs. a pc (but I suppose it may be too late as many people already have their computers), and there's this rummor going around that OSU housing won't be providing lamps in the residence halls this year. Really there are tons of little questions that everyone's dying to ask, but those are the major one that I've noted so far. I hope this helps.
