Any lover of the Discovery Channel knows that Mike Rowe is the every-man host of a quirky show named Dirty Jobs. In each episode, Mike tries his hand at a new dirty job, sometimes inspecting septic tanks, other times wrangling alligators, and even investigating rotting whale carcasses.
Because that sounded like a pretty good time, I too decided to try my hand at a number of different campus jobs. In all, I am receiving compensation of some form 4 different OSU departments. I know what you're thinking: "Rob, are you insane? You're so busy! You can't handle that many jobs!" In truth, each job takes up only a fraction of time, resulting in all four adding up to one normal 20-ish hour / week job.
Yet the idea of working dirty jobs didn't really appeal to me. Instead, as this blog entry title implies, they are all AWESOME jobs. So come along with me dear reader as we explore four of the greatest jobs that an undergraduate student at The Ohio State University can have. Here's a taste of things to come:
- Awesome Job: Buckeye Blogger
- The Good: Writing about college life; connecting with prospective students
- The Bad: Remembering to consistently write, even when you get busy!
- The Ugly: Writer's Block at 3AM!
- Awesome Job: Resident Hall Office Assistant
- The Good: Able to do homework when no other pressing need at front desk
- The Bad: Sometimes there's lots of paperwork and forms to worry about
- The Ugly: 8AM fire alarms
- Awesome Job: First-Year Engineering for Honors Physics 131 Lab Teaching Assistant
- The Good: I really enjoy teaching and the kids are super bright
- The Bad: Grading papers and lab notebooks
- The Ugly: Trying to figure out how someone got 25% error when other groups got 0.2% error
- Awesome Job: Engineering Ambassador
- The Good: I get paid to talk about how great OSU Engineering is!
- The Bad: My schedule doesn't allow for many tours this Quarter
- The Ugly: Some events on Saturday require a 7AM report time
Stay tuned for more in-depth looks at all these awesome jobs!
Take care,
Rob
